2023 was a special year for Lead Technology Development Engineer Sunday Chukwudi Okoro, as he returned to his home community, volunteering in two projects making a world of difference in his home county, Nsukka:
- STEM empowerment: A new IT lab for over 1000 students at the Federal Government Girls’ College in Lejja
- Water access: Solar-powered drinking water to over 1000 people in Opi Community

Both projects were run in close partnership with the NGO Rector Cares Foundation, for whom Sunday and his colleagues in the Water Utility Division were able to secure a Community Engagement Grant.
– I’ve been involved from the very beginning, drafting the application, aligning with Rector Cares and local stakeholders, and engaging my colleagues to help with system design and volunteering as virtual mentors for the STEM program, Sunday explains.

– Having spent my childhood with these people, their expressions of thanks, words of appreciation and prayers gave me great inspiration and a different insight into what making an impact means, he concludes.
Thanks to Sunday’s engagement, his friends and relatives no longer need to go long distances or spend expensively to purchase water.
