Janeth Zakaria once faced severe challenges due to the lack of reliable water. Like many villagers, she relied on a nearby spring, but during the dry season from August to October, the spring’s water levels dropped drastically. This scarcity made it difficult to collect enough water for daily needs, leading to conflicts among women and children who had to wait long hours to secure water for their families.
The struggle for water severely impacted Janeth’s household hygiene and overall well-being. With limited access to clean water, she had to ration it for essential tasks like washing clothes, cooking, and cleaning. This scarcity also meant Janeth had less time for other productive activities, as fetching water consumed much of her day.
Water transforms households
The installation of piped water in her community, generously supported by the Grundfos Foundation in partnership with UNICEF, has brought about a remarkable change in Janeth’s daily life.
The new water source is conveniently located near her home, making it easier for her to access the water she needs. This has eased the burden of fetching water and transformed her household hygiene practices.
Now, Janeth can ensure her home is clean, her children are properly bathed, and her family has access to safe drinking water. Beyond the convenience of the availability of water, Janeth has also gained new knowledge about proper hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing and maintaining a clean environment.
These practices were once challenging due to water scarcity, but now they are part of her daily routine. Janeth and her community are grateful for the clean, safe water that has brought positive changes to their lives, contributing to better health and a brighter future for their community
